Farewell to the cassette tape

It is reported that Mr. Lou Ottens, who introduced the cassette tape to the world, which was the foundation of making the world music listening system portable, has passed away on the 6th of March.

Born in 1926, he was 94 years old at the time of his death and was buried in his native Duizel, the Netherlands.

Working for Phillips in the early 1960s, he focused on replacing the then-large and expensive reel-to-reel tape technology with an easy-to-use, low-cost solution for the general public.

His first cassette tape, released during the Berlin Radio electronics fair in 1963, quickly spread around the world, and has since sold over 100 billion copies worldwide.

He also allowed other companies around the world to use the cassette technology for free, and it has been instrumental in popularizing the technology worldwide.

Lou Ottens also provided technical support for Philips' team in 1982 when Sony and Philips teamed up to create the first compact disc (CD).
